Top Ten Intimidating Books

This wonderful meme was brought to us by The Broke and the Bookish. Be sure to head over there to check out previous and next Top Ten Tuesday topics.

Today’s topic on Top Ten Tuesday is supposed to be:

Top Ten Author Duos You’d LOVE To See Write A Book Together (aka my (Jamie’s) world would explode if Gayle Forman and Jandy Nelson wrote a book together) — might be hard to come up with 10 but still would be fun! Bonus points if you tell us what kind of book you’d like them to write!

But since I had a hard time thinking of 3 pairs I decided to choose an older topic I didn’t do: Intimidating books.

I think we all have books we find intimidating. Whether it’s because the book has a complex plot, a lot of hype surrounding it or because it’s thicker than a dictionary, we avoid them. And so I’ll tell you about ten books that I find intimidating.

10. A Song of Ice and Fire series
9. The Goldfinch

The Goldfinch

This book has a lot of buzz around it an the page number of the paperback is 864. I think more nervous of the hype that surrounds it.
8. The Luminaries

The Luminaries

Page count: 848
7. The Way of Kings

The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, #1)

I’m equally nervous about the hype, plot complexity and page count (1008) of thus book.
6. Lord of the Rings

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1) The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, #2) The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, #3)

This is the only book on the list that I’ve read, but I found it intimidating because of the writing style, the hype, and the length. It’s was especially intimidating when I learned that this in fact isn’t a trilogy, but a single book.)
5. A Tale of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities

I don’t kw why I’m intimidated by this book. I just am.
4. Les Misérables

Les Misérables

complexity and page count (1463).
3. The Count of Monte Cristo

The Count of Monte Cristo

page count: 1276.
2. The Iliad

The Iliad
1. The Odyssey

The Odyssey

Hmm, I noticed a lot of these are classics. If you did a Top Ten this week, feel free to link it down blow. What are some intimidating books to you?

  1. I was intimidated by The Goldfinch but love Donna Tartt, so I got it on audible and listened to it for about 2 weeks. Less intimidating that way!I have also had the Luminaries on my shelf for a year, I bought it because it was so critically acclaimed. And I just can’t seem to pick it up.
I could only think of two author duos, this was a hard week.

    • That’s the same reason I picked up The Luminaries. I don’t know when I’ll get to that but I am hoping to get The Goldfinch sooner. Maybe next month? I’m a mood reader so it just depends on what genre I feel like reading.

    • I’ve actually read the first book in the series, and it took me SO long. It didn’t help that: 1. I’m a slow reader and 2. It was nearing finals when I was reading. But I love that world! It’s been like two years and I still haven’t read the second book

  2. Tales of Two Cities, The Iliad and The Odyssey are definitely intimidating books to me! I’ve also only managed to finish the first book in ASOIAF series…it was a long read, and I kept getting distracted LOL. I see that The Way of Kings is listed here as well…I was thinking of picking it up eventually…now I might have to double check to see if I can manage it.
You’re right this week was definitely difficult, I actually had to slightly alter the topic, despite that, I didn’t make 10.

  3. I totally agree about The Goldfinch! I took it out from the library a few months ago and immediately returned it once I realized how long it was. There was no way I was going to finish it without getting a late fee. Great list!

  4. I can see how a lot of these would be intimidating! Several of them have been on my list for ages, but just can’t bring myself to read them :p The Iliad and The Odyssey are both really long, but I think they are worth it 🙂

  5. if i hadn’t been required to read “A Tale of Two Cities” in high school, I probably would have been too intimidated by it to read it too. But I’m glad I had to read it because I really ended up enjoying it. Totally agree with you on #1 and 2…. forced to read those too and did NOT enjoy them lol My TTT
